Start from the beginning! Let the flair come later! Jose Mourinho was delighted
with the Chelsea qualities which earned the three points at St Andrews
yesterday.


“I think John Terry, Carvahlo, the full-backs coming inside, in the
second-half Tiago just in front of them, people in midfield working hard, the
strikers putting pressure on the ball… from the defensive point of view we
were fantastic,” he told Chelsea TV.


He conceded that, like the 1-0 defeat of Manchester United, this wasn’t a
pretty performance. “During a few periods we had the ball, we played the
football we like to play, adapted to the qualities of our skilful players,” he
said. “But other times you just have to adapt.”


“As I have said we can’t build our house starting with the roof, we have to
build defensive, and the foundations are good defensive organisation.


“There was a fantastic team spirit. The boys were fantastic the way they
fought, they were a team. In difficult moments in the last few minutes with a
lot of pressure, with a lot of direct play to the box, they were fantastic and
I am really pleased with them.”


Goalscoring substitute Joe Cole was understandably delighted with his winning
strike: “Nice to get off the mark for the season,” he said, “but more
importantly it’s helped us win the game.”


His arrival brought the change of balance to the game, not least because of the
change of shape to 4-3-3. “Their full-backs were getting a lot of the ball and
it was a good move by the gaffer because we could have got a couple on the
break. But we can play a lot better than today, we know that.


“They’re a very hard team to play against and I can’t see too many teams
coming here and getting three points off them this season. All credit to the
foreign lads who came in because they wouldn’t have played in a game like this
before in their careers, and I think they all played very well. I’ve told them
there’ll be a few more of those this season.”


Jose was pleased with Joe. “He becomes crucial not just because of the goal
but because we change the system, we play with three up with him coming from a
wide position inside, and he gave us a bit of creation. We did well.”


Steve Bruce recognised Chelsea’s quality but felt his side didn’t deserve to
lose: “It’s a kick in the teeth for us,” he said. “But if you have four or
five chances and don’t take them, you’re going to get punished.”
