Joe Cole has made a habit of rising from the bench to score goals this season.
On three of the four occasions he has come on as substitute in the Barclays
Premiership he has found the net. Twice he hit the only goal in wins over
Birmingham and Liverpool and now he has added the match-clinching second
against Portsmouth on Tuesday.
This latest strike from just over 20 yards was a rare goal from distance
according to Cole. Speaking to Chelsea TV after the game he said: “I’ve not
scored many outside the box, just one or two. With my left foot, this was
probably my first one.”
Against Portsmouth he was asked to operate in the midfield, coming on for the
more defensive Alexey Smertin in a swap described by Jose Mourinho as betting
one point to win three. It saw Cole playing deeper than most of his action this
season which has been as one of a front three.
“I’ve talked to Jose about that and his opinion on it but it was good to play
in the midfield today,” Cole reported. “It was what I feel is my best
position.”
The game also represented a successful return to action after a run of five
games in neither the starting line-up nor on the bench.
“It has been tough but this is football,” he admitted. “The manager makes
the decisions and I believe I am playing for the best club in the world at the
moment.
“You can talk about all the other big teams in Europe but I think the way that
we are playing at the moment is amazing. To have a good lead at the top of a
major European league is a feat in itself. I’ll just keep plugging away. The
fans when they watch me play see that I want to play.”
