Mourinho and O'Leary agree over missed "penalty"
Saturday, Sep 11, 2004
Examination of referee Rob Styles’s dubious handling of the incident involving
Ulises De La Cruz and Didier Droga dominated the post-match press conference.
Villa manager David O’Leary was “delighted” with his team’s performance and
the draw, but added: “I thought we got lucky on the penalty. If it had been my
end I’d have been expecting it.
“The actual decision is made in a split second. I thought I had a good view
and I thought it was a penalty.” The Villa boss suggested the referee might
like to reconsider the insult he added to the injury – his booking of Drogba
for diving. “I think where you can remove the sin is to rescind the card
afterwards,” he said. “I think that should be rescinded.”
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was happy to agree with his counterpart. “He
[O’Leary] is a football man, a fair person, and he’s correct. My view is your
view, the view of everybody in the stadium. Of course it was a penalty.
“In fact it was more than a penalty. In some countries it would be two
penalties! It was ridiculous, ridiculous. I can guess the referee was minimum
20 metres away.In the end we speak about points, and we lost two points.”
Mourinho was also disappointed with the linesman pulling Mateja Kezman up for a
foul after he'd robbed Thomas Sorensen and shot towards the open goal.
“I said to the officials, you need to give more of your green shirts to the
Villa dugout, because they are controlling the game,” he smiled. “Maybe I
should change the way I am on the bench, maybe I should jump around and throw
things like others do. But I have to say I love the way referees do it in
England – fair play, the advantage law is the best in the world here.”
Mourinho declared himself very happy with the performances of his players,
especially after draining national team commitments, and said he had “no
complaints” although he rued the late missed chances for Drogba, Mutu and
especially Gudjohnsen.
“We deserved more to win this match than the Birmingham match,” he said. “We
had control of the game and couldn’t score. Sometimes football is like this.
“The international week affected our preparation a lot. Not just those who
played in internationals, but those who didn’t. Cole was in the national team
and played five minutes, Tiago played zero. I have to understand that. Instead
of a very strong Cole and very strong Tiago I didn’t have this. That’s
football. The club suffers the consequences.”
It had been an interesting pell-mell of a match, largely controlled by Chelsea,
and with a succession of chances made and squandered. O’Leary’s deployment of
Nolberto Solano in the ‘hole’ behind the strikers helped make an open, fluid
game. “I tried to jiggle around the midfield and give them a problem,”
O’Leary said. “But I thought at times in the last third the quality of player
they have they used the ball better.”
