Ferreira faces up to familiar opponents

Last November’s 1-0 win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge is still
fresh in the memories of all Chelsea players involved that day. But for two of
this summer’s newly arrived players, victory over Giggs, Scholes, Keane and
co. was enjoyed even more recently.



Paulo Ferreira and Ricardo Carvalho were both in the Porto team that beat Man
United over two legs in the Champions League last February and March. Now as he
looks to make his Chelsea debut against the same opposition in the opening
Premiership encounter, Ferreira has been reflecting on that achievement and
talking about Jose Mourinho’s preparation work both then and now.



“We worked hard and we tried to do what he (Mourinho) wanted us to do. We
played well, it was our night and in the first match we scored two goals,”
Chelsea’s new right-back recalls as being key reasons for the Porto victory.

我們很努力,也盡量做到臭臉穆的要求.我們踢得不錯,那是屬於我們的夜晚,是我們第一場

“And at Porto we didn’t play like individuals, we played like a team. It is
not easy to beat Manchester United but we played well and we had a good team.”

在波爾圖講求的事團隊精神.擊敗曼聯是不容易的,但是我們表現好,擁有一個好的團隊.


Of the manager’s words before the tie, Ferreira reports: “He said anything is
possible. He said they have good players but you have to be careful of some
players more than others. Also that we have to do our job, to play.

他說任何事都可能發生.臭臉穆曾說'曼聯有好球員,但是你必須更注意其中的一些球員.另
外,我們也必須做好份內的工作,踢場好球.'


“He did homework, he studied and we did what he told us to do. We saw
something that meant we could score a goal or two and we studied, just like
Manchester United will have studied Chelsea.

臭臉穆有作功課,他研究然後我們依照他的指示來做.我們看到一些跡象,說明我們可能可以

“But this is a different game,” Ferreira warns. “It is not the Champions
League, it is the Championship so it is a lot different. It is important to
start well in the Championship, not just because it is against Manchester
United. I guess it is a good time to play against them because they don’t have
many players. But it will be difficult.

“Their strength is definitely as a team. They have great players but they play
for the team.”

Ferreira explains that the line-up for this latest clash will have been
announced the day before the game and the players will study videos closely
with Mourinho ahead of the kick-off. The final training sessions were tailored
with the opposition in mind. Just as they are in preparation for any team
Mourinho takes on.



On the general methods used by the coach he knows so well, Ferreira highlights:
“Hard work and discipline, as simple as that. He wants everything correct and
we try to do what he wants.

努力加訓練,就這麼簡單.臭臉穆要求每件事都做到正確,我們也都努力達到他的要求.


“I don’t have any problems with him. If I had any problems I wouldn’t come
to Chelsea with him. It is easy to work with him.”

我和他之間沒有任何問題,如果有我就不會跟他來到切爾西.和他共事很愉快.


If selected, a lot of Ferreira’s own personal preparation ahead of the game
will no doubt be centred around the player he is mostly likely to be pitted
directly against – Ryan Giggs.



“I have played against him and I know it is difficult,” he says. “He is a
good player and I have to try everything to stop him. It is difficult to say
exactly how I will play against him, it is all in the game.

“When I have to defend, I defend. When I have space to go, I go. I have to
respect him but on the pitch you have to play the same. I have played against

All the talk of hard work and organisation has led to the suggestion being put
to Ferreira that Chelsea may be boring to watch this season.



“We will be exciting,” he counters. “We will work hard and be exciting.”

And on a further suggestion that Mourinho will take some time to learn the
requirements of the Premiership: “I think he knows,” Ferreira responds with
his own knowing smile.
