As with Barcelona in the last round, the Chelsea squad has flown out to Munich
two days before the away tie, arriving in the Bavarian German city on Sunday
afternoon.
In the Group stage of the competition only Moscow, a longer trip, was given a
two day preparation. For Paris and Porto the squad flew out the day before.
The players trained at Cobham before leaving yesterday. Mateja Kezman was
missing after suffering a sharp fever on Saturday evening. That could result
in Mikael Forssell again being on the bench. Players who were not involved in
the first leg 18 who are on the trip are Lenny Pidgeley and Filipe Oliveira.
Cup tied Jiri Jarosik is also here to join in with the training.
The squad trains late this afternoon, Monday, at the Olympic Stadium.
Bayern Munich beat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 there on Saturday watched by
Chelsea’s Andre Villas.
Roy Makaay returned but struggled. Like Chelsea, Bayern did not play well.
Coach Felix Magath was upbeat however. “The result is what counts because
we're now three points clear of Schalke. Now we'll start thinking about
Chelsea. I think we proved today we're always capable of scoring two goals here
at home. We can do it on Tuesday, too.”
Munich’s team was: Kahn; Sagnol, Lucio, Kovac, Lizarazu (Ze Roberto h-t);
Schweinsteiger (Deisler 82), Demichelis (Scholl 59), Ballack, Salihamidzic;
Guerrero, Makaay.
Monchengladbach took the lead midway through the second-half with Sagnol beaten
for the cross and Kahn flapping, but Scholl equalised a minute later past
goalkeeper Kasey Keller. Australian defender Craig Moore was then sent off and
Munich went after the ten men. Makaay hit a post, but it was a late Ballack
header from a Sagnol cross that earned the points.
Ballack had been taking some media criticism in Germany for his ‘dive’ for
the late penalty at Stamford Bridge, so this was a good winner for him.
Schalke lost 3-0 at Stuttgart.
