Wednesday night’s Champions League match will be officiated by one
of the most recognisable referees on the European circuit, Anders Frisk
of Sweden.
Frisk hit the headlines earlier this season when struck by a missile
thrown from the crowd in Rome’s Stadio Olympico, leading to the
abandonment of a match between Roma and Dynamo Kiev. But he has also been
involved in some of Chelsea’s most significant Champions League past.
He was the man in charge the last time we played in Barcelona’s Camp
Nou, back in 2000 when Chelsea lost 5-1 after extra-time. Earlier that
season he was the referee for our first proper game in the competition, a
0-0 home draw against Milan.
Last season Frisk officiated the game that ended our campaign, the
2-2 Stamford Bridge draw versus Monaco in the semi-final second leg, plus
the group stage away win against Besiktas, played in Germany.
