Porto travel with win under belt

Porto warmed up for a Champions League trip to London this week by finally
winning their first domestic league game of the season on Saturday.
The European Champions mirrored Chelsea’s weekend result with a 1-0 away win,
beating Guimaraes thanks to an 83rd minute strike from Costinha, the midfielder
whose even later goal at Old Trafford broke Man United’s Champions League
hopes last season.
His weekend winner followed a corner from Brazilian Diego. Ex-Spurs man Helder
Postiga was sent-off for arguing with the referee.
Since losing the European Super Cup to Valencia in August, Porto had drawn
their first three league games plus their Champions League opener. This win
took them up to sixth in the Portuguese Superliga. It was, however, achieved
without both first choice full-backs, Nuno Valente and Greek Euro 2004 hero
Giorkas Seitaridis who were injured.
Also tasting victory for the first time this season on Saturday were one of
Chelsea’s other Group H opponents, Paris Saint-Germain. Last season’s French
runners-up had gone a miserable nine games in all competitions without a win
but this time beat Strasbourg 1-0 at home.
The goal came from another Portuguese source, Pauleta finding the net in the
79th minute. PSG move up to 16th while Strasbourg go bottom.
It was left to CSKA Moscow to break Group H’s 1-0 victory pattern. They
suffered a defeat in one of the Russian capital’s many derbies, at home to
Lokomotiv. Again a single goal was enough to decide the game leaving CSKA two
points behind leaders Zenit St. Petersburg.
