Mourinho selects big squad for his reunion

A 20-man squad has been named for a match that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is
playing down as just ‘one more game’.
The significance of Porto doing battle so soon with the coach who turned them
into European Champions has hardly been lost in the build up to Wednesday
evening’s game but as Chelsea attempt to win for the first time on Champions
League Matchday Two, it is only the period between the first and last whistle
that is bothering Mourinho.
Speaking on the eve of the encounter he said: “I’m sure I will have some
feeling that it is nice to see players like Derlei and Jorge Costa in the
tunnel but during the 90 minutes, what matters is the points and that is what
we want.
“During the game it is one more game. It is not the first time I am facing my
ex-team. When I was in Porto I played against Benfica, against Leiria and
against Barcelona - teams where I had worked and have a lot of friends. That is
football and one day when I play against Chelsea the feeling will be similar.
“It’s not a special feeling during the game. You have to forget, you have to
play, you have to concentrate on your target and our target is to get points.
“After the game of course we will meet and we will find people that you like
or people who like you and of course the emotion has to come. But during 90
minutes, and we are speaking about 90 minutes of football, no more than that,
it is a game they want to win and one we want to win and that is normal.”
Prior to Chelsea’s win over Middlesbrough at the weekend Mourinho explained
that the arrival of Porto was not taking up a great deal of his time or
thoughts.
Last Friday he said: “The game next Wednesday is not taking me out of the
Middlesbrough game because I know the opponent and we have three days to rest.
I know the players, I don’t need to spend much time studying them, so I’m
fully concentrated on Middlesbrough because I feel it will be a very difficult
match for us.”
It was a challenge his players met and now prior to the new European test, the
Chelsea manager confirmed he has the knowledge he needs despite not having seen
the current Porto in the flesh
“The reason why is I know the Porto players very well and obviously I
couldn’t be in Guimaraes (Porto’s last opponent) as we were playing
Middlesbrough and I couldn’t watch them against CSKA because we were playing
at the same time. But some of my staff, they have been there and I have watched
the videos. I know the players very well so I don’t think there was need for
that.”
As well as an ex-Porto manager and the current Porto players, there will be a
third party involved in the reunion on Wednesday evening - the Porto fans.
Mourinho is confident he will be well received by the majority in the East
Stand Lower.
“My reception depends on the type of supporter,” he reckons. “If they are
the pure supporters who have had Porto hearts since ever, they cannot forget
what I did with the club. Maybe the professional fans will hate me.
“The Porto team that was European Champion was together two years and we
improved every season,” Mourinho concluded. “We won the UEFA Cup and we
improved the team for the next season. It was the work of two years and the
team arrives with the European Cup at the end of the process. At Chelsea we are
at the beginning of the process.
“But it is not important to compare the two teams, it is important to achieve
the target and our target in this game is the three points. If we can get three
points I will be happy even without comparing teams.”
With seven substitutes allowed on the bench for Champions League games, the
Chelsea squad selected to attempt the target is:
Cech, Cudicini, Ferreira, Johnson, Carvalho, Huth, Terry, Gallas, Bridge,
Makelele, Parker, Geremi, Lampard, Smertin, Tiago, Cole, Duff, Gudjohnsen,
Kezman, Drogba.
