Carvalho pre-match honour

Ricardo Carvalho will be presented before kick-off against Porto with UEFA's
2004 European Football Award for Best Defender.
The trophy will be handed over by England head coach Sven Goran Eriksson and
UEFA's technical director Andy Roxburgh.
The winning of the award, which recognises performance during last season’s
Champions League competition, was first announced in Monte Carlo on the night
of this season’s draw in August.
On hearing the news he had won the accolade, Carvalho said: "It's a real honour
to be acknowledged in this way, especially in relation to a competition as
prestigious as the UEFA Champions League.

Carvalho played all 1,170 minutes of football as Porto won the UEFA Champions
League, beating Monaco 3-0 in the final. He also helped the club win the
Portuguese League and then starred in Portugal's run to the Final of Euro 2004,
winning selection in the competition's All-Star Squad.
