Smertin fitness doubt for CSKA match

Alexey Smertin warmed up separately from the rest of the team in
training at the Lokomotiv Moscow stadium where Chelsea face CSKA tomorrow,
Tuesday.
He was running with physio Mike Banks while the rest of the team got
the balls out and went through their normal preparations.

Jose Mourinho had refused to tell the press conference before training
whether Smertin would be playing. “I cannot confirm or not,” he said,
keeping his team plans close to chest. But rather than the old manager
cliche of he’ll pick the team tonight or tomorrow, Mourinho added, “I
know the team but I’m not saying.”

What he did talk about was Chelsea’s responsibility to field proper
teams in the last three games despite being so far ahead, to push on and
win the Group as soon as possible, and while accepting that CSKA were the
best team Chelsea had played so far in the UEFA Champions League, that the
improving Paris St-Germain should not be written off as the team to come
through.
The player Mourinho chose to have alongside him for the conference was
William Gallas, scorer of the first goal at West Bromwich Albion on
Saturday. It was further emphasis of Gallas’ importance to the team and
squad, and his own comfort with his situation and the English language.

Mourinho spoke of how much easier it was to win the Portuguese
Championship and Champions League than it would be to win the Premiership
and Champions League.
“Early on we opened a big gap and I could rotate. I think here it will
go to the end of the season.”

He stressed that his comments about Chelsea being the best team in
England had been statistical, and he admitted that Arsenal were still
probably a level above Chelsea.
Yet when challenged as to whether he’d rather win the Premiership or
the Champions League again he narrowed his eyes and said: “Both!”
Then he added: “For the Chelsea fans, it is so long since they won the
League and they have never won the European.”

The referee tomorrow is an Italian, Massimo De Santis, who hasn’t
officiated a Chelsea game before. He took charge of Sparta Prague v Man Utd
on the last Matchday.
