Chelsea’s opponents on Matchday One in the UEFA Champions League have drawn three and lost two to date. At home they have drawn two. Their lack of cohesion early in the season forced them, when losing at home to St Etienne, to switch from a 4-4-2 shape to 4-3-3. Jose Mourinho and his scout Andre Villas watched that match on the Sunday before the international break. PSG pulled back from a goal down to lead 2-1 through strikes from the French- Nigerian, Bartholemew Ogbeche (No 12), who is very fast indeed, and a penalty by Portuguese international Pauleta (9). St Etienne equalised three minutes from time. On Saturday they drew 1-1 away to just promoted Istres and, watched by Gwyn Williams, kept their 4-3-3 shape. Conceding a goal early, they had to battle to get anything from the match. Pauleta came off the bench to score another penalty. Paris have two players suspended for tomorrow, Tuesday, when we face each other. Central defender Mario Yepes, a Columbian, is a major loss. Arguably, he is their main defender. Stephane Pichot, another defender, is injured anyway so his suspension is not so crucial. PSG could move former Bolton full-back Bernard Mendy (5) into the centre of defence, or could bring in former Portugal international Helder (20), the 33 year old full-back who signed from Benfica in the summer. PSG will have Jerome Rothen (25) on the left-wing, the man who did so much damage against us for Monaco last season, creating three of their five goals. He, however, will be looking for a better return out of Paulo Ferreira than he got in the Champions League Final. He was sold to PSG during summer and is now a regular in the national squad. Another familiar player is midfielder Edouard Cisse (14), one time on loan at West Ham, last season on loan to Monaco. Also needing watching in midfield is busy Cameroonian Modeste M’Bami (23). The crowd, which will be around 50,000, should be vociferous in its loathing of any ex-Marseille players. Ironically, William Gallas, Claude Makelele and Didier Drogba have all played for Marseille. Prepare for fireworks!! This is their first time in the Champions League since the 2000/1 season when they qualified for the Second Group Stage.
