Chelsea has watched Scunthorpe three times ahead of our FA Cup tie with
Jose Mourinho’s chief opposition scout Andre Villas leading the way.
He saw them draw 1-1 at Chester. Reserve team manager Mick McGiven saw
them win 2-1 at Cambridge. And another scout watched them win 1-0 at home
to Swansea.
Andre believes they must not be taken for granted. “For a League Division
Two team they have good organization,” he says. “The principles are
direct football, but direct football with some basics and quality.
“The guy who impressed was Beagrie with his experience. In one to ones he
can still beat defenders. In attack Hayes has some mobility, some good
movement.
“Sparrow is also a good player and can play inside midfield or wide right.
He has some quality and inside can go one on one.”
Andre has been impressed with the way they defend. “It is not at all bad,
they’re not a team who wants to drop back and defend, they play with some
space behind. Goalkeeper Musselwhite obviously has experience and he’s
good with his feet, confident upfield.”
When the draw was made Scunthorpe were leading League Two, but perhaps with
our game in mind they have failed to win in their last four, and have now
fallen behind Yeovil into second place.
Their manager, Brian Laws, was at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday to watch us
beat Middlesbrough.
