Targeting an Old Trafford first and the Final

Tuesday afternoon saw Chelsea send a strong squad north on a mission
to beat Manchester United in an Old Trafford cup match for the first
time. The reward for success is the Carling Cup Final.
Just Ricardo Carvalho and Scott Parker were unable to make the journey
through injury, the game the first return for Jose Mourinho to the
scene of his Porto side’s famous victory in the Champions League
last season.

There has been no such success for his managerial predecessors at Chelsea.
The club won the FA Cup at Old Trafford in 1970 but that was against Leeds.
Against Man United on their home ground Chelsea have failed to emerge
victorious in seven cup games. In contrast, our League form there over the
last 20 years includes six wins.
“We have a good record there in recent years but I have also played in
teams that have lost at Old Trafford. It is mixed,” confirmed assistant
manager Steve Clarke prior to departure.

“I think the game is poised 50-50,” is the Clarke assessment. “There
may be just a slight advantage to us in that a score draw after extra
time sees us go through but it is going to be a very, very close game.
It is two sides both playing on the top of their form and it should be a
good evening for the fans.”

In Carling Cup ties, away goals only count double at the end of extra-time
rather than 90 minutes as in European games. Goals are needed to avoid a
penalty shoot-out but Clarke refuses to read too much into the two clean
sheets kept by Chelsea against Alex Ferguson’s men already this season.
“Both of those games were at our place. This is at Old Trafford and they
will have the majority of support behind them. We are under no illusions.
They’re on a very good run, we’re on a very good run and I thought the
first leg was a very good and very intense game even though it was 0-0.

For Man United, Alan Smith is reportedly fit to return having missed the
three games since the first leg with an ankle injury. Midfielder Darren
Fletcher is ruled out with a similar injury but there is talk that Roy
Keane may be considered for his first Carling Cup action of the season.
