A missed penalty, three efforts cleared off the line and two one on ones with the goalkeeper could not produce a result. A poor start in which central defender Adrian Pettigrew and goalkeeper James Russell were indecisive on the edge of the area allowed Colchester striker Richard Harris to force the ball past the keeper and find an empty net. Chelsea responded quickly, and despite a midfield lacking suspended Anthony Grant, first year scholar Dean Furman scored an explosive equaliser, forcing himself through a challenge and striking a wonderful 20 yard left-footer. It was his first youth team goal. Between then, with ten minutes gone, and midway through the second-half when Colchester hit the winner, Pettigrew had two efforts cleared off the line, both from Joe Tillen corners. Tillen, in space, had a one on one with the goalkeeper saved, and Phil Younghusband stroked wide on the run with just the goalkeeper to beat. Jamie Simmonds hit a fine lob from distance which the goalkeeper touched over. Chelsea had all the possession and creative play, but Colchester’s forwards were fast, strong and determined, and causing the experienced defence concern. Michael Mancienne, back in the side after almost two months out with injury, picked up a new one when he turned his ankle defending a strong run by Jamie Guy, and at half-time he was replaced by striker Jack Watkins. A reshuffle was required which shifted Simmonds to attacking on the left, and immediately he found joy, dancing into the penalty area on several occasions. In the end he won a penalty, but Phil Younghusband blasted it over the bar. Midway through the half Colchester had a good spell, running at Chelsea’s defence, and when the powerful Guy forced some room through the middle he thundered a 25 yarder into the bottom corner in old fashioned Alan Shearer style. Unbelievably, the giant killing was on. Chelsea switched to a diamond midfield. Jimmy Smith knocked in an effort from another corner which was cleared from the line, but the ecstatic Essex crowd cheered their young team on to the fourth round. It was a game Chelsea should have won. Afterwards coach Brendan Rodgers pointed out in the dressing room that for some of the youngsters this had been their last chance in the Youth Cup. Time moves on. This defeat was the last game before Christmas. In the New Year the youngsters will have to start proving themselves once again.
