Chelsea Youth 1 Ipswich Town Youth 1
Saturday, Feb 19, 2005
Chelsea drew with Ipswich this morning, Saturday, for the second time
this season. Left-back Ben Hudell scored from his own half.
It was a magnificent wind-assisted first-half goal. The free-kick was
wide of the centre-circle about five yards inside the Chelsea half.
Hudell spotted the Ipswich keeper off his line and took it quickly.
It bombed in for his second goal of the campaign.
Coach Brendan Rodgers said: “It was great vision and great technique,
as good a goal as you could see.”
Chelsea created lots of first-half chances and ran the game, but couldn’t
lengthen the lead. At half-time Anthony Grant, who was on the first team
bench this season against Scunthorpe, returned from a bout of mumps, but
the second-half performance wasn’t as satisfactory for Rodgers.
“We lost our discipline, our shape, and we didn’t dictate the game in
the same way.” Although Chelsea still created the better of the chances,
rather than increasing the lead it was lost when a free-kick ten minutes
from time was met with slack marking and Ipswich equalised.
