With a night of action on Merseyside to go to discover the
make-up of this season's first Wembley final, columnist Giles Smith offers
his personal take on events.
So, Tottenham 5 Arsenal Reserves 1. And now we know
exactly the treat that lies in store if we manage a draw, or better, at
Goodison Park tonight: a final against Spurs at Wembley.
It's a hugely motivating prospect, no? Shades of the FA Cup final of 1967 -
although, of course, Tottenham were a much bigger club in those days. And the
new Wembley wasn't finished. Why, it didn't even have an arch in those days.
It only had towers, which weren't the same.
Sorry for Arsenal, of course. But, in the end, we've kind of been there and
done that, last season, and (assuming we get through, this is) it's always
nice to ring the changes. Also, I suspect I may not be alone in finding Arsè
ne Wenger's 'I use kids in the Carling, me' gag beginning to wear a little
thin now.
I mean, it was funny the first time, and it
still can be pretty amusing occasionally, as long as you're not the butt of
it. But with repetition, there comes to be something faintly mean-spirited
and even unpleasant about it, not least of all the way it puts the opposition
on a total hiding to nothing (humiliated if you lose, obviously, but kind of
humiliated if you win, too, in a strange way).
In the end, it's probably right that the Carling final should be contested by
two teams who genuinely respect the competition and cherish its noble
traditions, and that much, at least, is guaranteed now that Arsenal Reserves
have gone.
It's never been the Chelsea way to field under strength sides for Carling
ties, for the very good reason that we don't really believe in employing
under strength players in the first place. And if you think either David
Moyes or Juande Ramos is likely to use the final to give a run-out to a
couple of promising apprentices and some bloke who operates the iron in the
club shop shirt-personalising department, then I think you underestimate the
eagerness of both those managers to clinch a guaranteed place in Europe
before February is over.
Fair enough. We'd all be mad not to. Especially Juande
Ramos, who can hardly have watched Tottenham get turned over at home by
Birmingham in the league and reckoned that he would have much need for his
suitcase and passport in the 2008-09 season.
That, though, is the magic of the Carling: five midweek games
of football and a Sunday afternoon final, and it's Norway and Belgium ahoy in
the UEFA the following year. Italy, if you're lucky. Spain, even. Talk about
a cheap holiday. And when the Champions League tips out its failures at the
end of the group stage, you can even find yourself coming up against a team
or two that you might have heard of.
Whoever goes through tonight could find
themselves facing a bit of a battle, come the big day. There is every
indication that this is a stronger, more resilient Tottenham than the
hapless, paper bag-style Tottenhams we have seen in recent years. The proof
is in that four-day spell they had, a fortnight ago.
First of all, they were all over Arsenal
Reserves at the Emirates in the first leg of the Carling semi-final, but
still didn't beat them, thanks to a freak equaliser. And then, on the
Saturday straight afterwards, they came to Stamford Bridge and got beaten in
a manner which only emphasised the yawning gap between our two teams as
Premier League forces.
The Tottenhams of old would have found that combination of blows utterly
deflating and psychologically destabilising, and would have promptly gone
into a downwards spiral lasting at least two months and possibly even until
the end of the season. This Tottenham, though, has kept a grip, beat Reading
in an FA Cup replay, won in the league at the weekend (albeit at home to
Sunderland) and managed to finish the job against Arsenal Reserves with a
modicum of style.
That said, a lot can happen between now and 24 February - starting with a
potentially depleting FA Cup tie at Old Trafford. Normal, papery service
could well have been resumed by the time the Carling comes round again.
But we're getting ahead of ourselves here. We're still 90 minutes away - a
goal up, it's true, but half a squad down in terms of injuries and enforced
absences.
On the topic of which, you saw, perhaps, Salomon Kalou's glorious goal for
the Ivory Coast the other night - that gliding run in which he appeared to
beat every member of the Nigerian defence, and a couple of them twice, before
calmly sliding the ball into the bottom corner.
Now, obviously one is all in favour of players representing
their countries, if the desire so grips them. At the same time, it was hard
(especially with the Carling on) to suppress the ungenerous thought: 'Why
aren't you back here, doing that for us?
One would mind less if other people didn't keep getting
crocked exactly as they find a rich vein of form. The ankle injury to Shaun
Wright-Phillips is, in the circumstances, especially grievous. Where is the
aerial threat going to come from now?
My guess: Joe Cole.
