RESERVES UPDATE

The Reserve team played their third pre-season match on Wednesday night,
going down 1-0 at Hampton and Richmond.

This fails to tell the story of the game though, as a young Blues team
registered 29 shots on goal, prevented from scoring only by some fantastic
goalkeeping, resolute defending and a failure to take our chances. Reserve
team manager Brendan Rodgers remains upbeat, and insists that at this
stage of the season, results are not important.

'The workout was valuable and that's the second game in a row we've gone
to Hampton, it's a good club with good people,' he said.

The objective at this stage, just like in the first team, remains
acquiring a solid base of fitness for the season ahead.

'Players who were playing 45 or 50 minutes are now looking at going on to
65, 70, 90 minutes work,' Rodgers explains.

Hampton took the lead after 10 minutes with a direct free kick, and from
there on Chelsea dominated the game, but were unable to draw level. Next
up is a trip to our new reserve home ground Griffin Park, where the
Reserves take on Brentford on Tuesday 31 July.
