Gugliotta's next shot might be as a Bull

While the Bulls wait for restricted free agents Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry,
Chris Duhon and Jannero Pargo to sign offer sheets that will determine their
market values, they have their sights on other players in the open market.
According to a source close to the situation, veteran Tom Gugliotta has emerged
as the most likely candidate for the Bulls to sign with their midlevel
exception.
Agent Richard Howell on Wednesday indicated the 35-year-old Gugliotta is
interested in four of the six teams that have inquired about his client
recently, but he would not elaborate further on the subject.
"I don't negotiate through the media, so I would rather not comment on any
of the possibilities until a contract has been signed," Howell said. "What I
will say is that Tom has every intention to play somewhere next season."
Bulls general manager John Paxson also declined to comment on the situation.
If and when Duhon re-signs, the Bulls are expected to have nearly half of
their $5 million-plus midlevel exception available.
"Until the situation with our restricted free agents is resolved, we won't
know exactly what we have to offer," Paxson said. "Until then, there are
several possibilities that we'll consider."
At 6-foot-10, 250 pounds, Gugliotta appears to be a good fit for a Bulls
team in need of size and savvy on the front line.
The decisive factor may be the favorable history Gugliotta has with Scott
Skiles, the Bulls' head coach. Gugliotta spent five-plus seasons with Phoenix
, three of them while Skiles was on the bench.
A one-time All-Star, Gugliotta averaged 5.1 points and 4.1 rebounds in 47
games last season, which he split between Boston and Atlanta.
Gugliotta played sparingly with the Celtics early in the season before he
was traded to the Hawks, where he came on strong in the second half. With the
Hawks, he averaged 7.9 points and 5.5 rebounds in 27 games, nine of them as a
starter.
"Tom played well in Atlanta, even if the won-loss record wasn't what he
would have liked there," Howell said. "There's no reason to believe that he
cannot perform the same way next season."
Other options for the Bulls include forwards Malik Allen, Michael Finley
and Toni Kukoc.
New Jersey also is said to be interested in Allen, 27, who averaged 5.4
points and 2.8 rebounds in 36 games with Miami and Charlotte last season.
If Dallas releases Finley as part of a one-time amnesty opportunity under
the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement — and saves $51 million
in the process — another team could sign him at far less than his market
value. The Melrose Park native is receptive to a return home after a subpar
season that saw him average 15.7 points and 4.1 rebounds in 64 games.
Before that happens, however, the Mavericks are expected to make every
effort to trade the 32-year-old Finley to an Eastern Conference team in
return for players who are in the final year of their contracts, which would
take the Bulls out of the picture. Orlando is reportedly one of the interested
parties.
The 36-year-old Kukoc also is under consideration, although some in the
organization are concerned his addition would be a repeat of the failed
Scottie Pippen experiment.
Pippen was offered a guaranteed two-year contract to return to the Bulls
two seasons ago, but a chronic knee problem limited him to 23 games before he
was released.
Last season, Kukoc made just 53 appearances with Milwaukee because of
injuries. He averaged 5.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.
In the first step toward a more regional scouting approach, the Bulls
hired Dave Bollwinkel to serve as their western college scout. Bollwinkel was
the west coast advance scout for the Philadelphia 76ers last season.

Gugliotta
Gugliotta
(Pargo Griffin Harrington)
