報導的標題以「Why does their music soundso beautifully sad?」

#156 - EDITORIAL
With the obvious exception of 'Chinese Democracy', it's unlikely that any
album this year will have as much to prove as Mayhem's 'Ordo Ad Chao'. This
is a band who are central to the black metal mythology, whose 'De Mysteriis
Dom Sathanas' stands as one of the genre's highest standards, and yet for
almost a decade have been suffering a crisis of identity. Their last two
albums ' the diffuse, experimental 'A Grand Declaration Of War' and the
unspectacular attempt to get back on track that was 'Chimera' ' showed a band
unsure how to further their legacy, whilst the nihilistic edge that had
resulted in the murder and suicide of lore had subsided into addictions to
drugs and drink that not only sucked the life out of many of their gigs, but
threatened to tear the band apart. Mayhem were lost, their power squandered,
and any further disappointments would have cast them as an irrelevance, a
hangover to be shrugged off.
As it turns out, 'Ordo Ad Chao' is just the revelation we needed. It's not a
'good Mayhem album', it's difficult, demanding, devoid of relief, a turgid
miasma like descending to the river Styx only to find that it's in the
process of congealing into sludge. With the return of fearless former
vocalist Attila Csihar to the fold, Mayhem have rediscovered the vast, barren
spirit of 'De Mysteriis...', only to let it loose amongst new, unfathomable
terrain. Perhaps they've caught some of the monged-out wrongness of Blut Aus
Nord and later Meshuggah, but they've withdrawn it into their own dark night
of the soul, touched on black metal's nerve centre and made it resonate once
more. Will 'Ordo Ad Chao' prove just as divisive as 'A Grand Declaration...'
or a new era for Mayhem? One of the central tenets of black metal is at
stake, and inside we get up close and personal with the band as we get the
inside story of the tempestuous years that gave rise to such a monster, the
internal ructions that led to the departure of Maniac and the personal trials
that have been articulated in such disturbing fashion ' a tale not for the
faint hearted.
This month also brings our Art Special to a close as we look at the
psychedelic world of poster art, and get a revealing insight from the revered
illustrator, Dave McKean. We also bring you the remarkable story of Taiwanese
black metallers, ChthoniC, a band steeped in the turbulence of both ancient
and modern history, and next month we take you even further afield to reveal
how metal thrives in the harshest of climates; all proof that extreme music
plays by the highest of stakes.
