It finds its manifestation not only in philosophy proper, but also in various fields of the human sciences. This course is designed as a general introduction to critical theory-its history and its basic concerns. We will include for our discussion the major works of the founding members of the Frankfurt School, such as Walter Benjamin, Max Horkheimer, Theodor W. Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, Leo Lowenthal, etc. Our focus will mainly be on their writings on aesthetic and cultural criticism. Students are advised to read Martin Jay`s The Dialectical Imagination: A History of the Frankfurt School and the Institute of Social Research, 1923-1950 for an understanding of the history of the School. Reading materials (tentative): 1. Andrew Arato and Eike Gebhardt, eds. The Essential Frankfurt School Reader (1981). 2. Walter Benjamin. Illuminations: Essays and Reflections (1985). 3. Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno. Dialectic of Enlightenment (1988). 4. Theodor W. Adorno. The Culture Industry: Selected Essays on Mass Culture (1991). 5. Herbert Marcuse. One-Dimensional Man: Studies in the Ideology of Advanced Industrial Society (1964). 6. Leo Lowenthal. Literature, Popular Culture, and Society (1960). -- La litterature est condamnee a se signifier elle-meme a traver une ecriture qui ne peut etre libre. ---- Roland Barthes -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.twbbs.org) ◆ From: poe.m7.ntu.edu.tw
