這次的第15回模考..作文裡面很多同學都用到
on the contrary這個片語...可是卻都用錯了
同學們是這麼用的：
When a person goes to work, he will dress himself formally.
On the contrary, if he goes to a party, he might dress himself
casually.
這樣用......是錯的，on the contrary中文翻成「相反地」
它的意思是「恰恰相反..」
用來
(1)否定前面的一個敘述(前後部分意義完全相反)
A:John is a humble gentleman.
B:On the contrary, he is an arrogant hypocrite.
A: John是一個謙虛的紳士。
B: 恰恰相反，他是個傲慢的偽君子。
(2)強調前面的否定句(前後部分意義相同，後面的肯定句用以強調前面的否定句)
The evening gown she wore last night was by no means ugly;
on the contrary, it was beautiful and elegant.
昨天她穿的晚禮服絕對不醜，相反地，它很漂亮也很高雅。
而事實上，同學寫的情況是在對比兩種不同的情況，應該要用by contrast或是
on the other hand。
eg1. John is an arrogant hypocrite; by contrast, Jack is a humble gentleman.
John是個傲慢的偽君子，對比之下，Jack是個謙虛的紳士。
eg2. I have never been able to cook but on the other hand, my sister can
bake wonderful biscuits and cakes.
我從來都不會烹飪，但另一方面來說，我的姊姊會烤很好吃的餅乾和蛋糕。
eg3. Nuclear power is relatively cheap. On the other hand, the government
should also take its safety into consideration.
核電相對來說比較便宜，但從另一方面來說，政府也也應該將其安全性列入考慮。
