April Fools' Day started in the Middle Ages, many centuries ago. Then,
the servants were the masters for that day. They gave orders to their
masters and the masters had to obey their servants.
A fool is someone who behaves rather stupidly. If someone is easily
fooled, they will believe anything they are told, so it is easy to trick
them. On the morning of April Fool's Day, people play tricks on each other
so they can say "April Fool" if their trick is successful. This sort of trick
is known as a practical joke. A favorite schoolboy trick is to pin a notice
on someone's back which says, "Please kick me." Many schoolgirls have screamed
when boys have pointed to them, saying, "There's a spider in your hair!"
The girls' screams turn into anger when the boys shout "April Fool!"
A very important rule on April Fools' Day is that the jokes have to
end at twelve noon. After this time, if you play a trick, you are the fool.
Nowadays, most people are not so easy to fool, especially on April 1st.
