The 228 Event
It has been 56 years since the 228 event occurred in 1947,
beginning in Taipei City and spreading to all of Taiwan.
The return of Taiwan Island, a Japanese colony, to the Nationalist
China was result in the victory of World War II and the defeat of
the Japanese in 1945; nevertheless, none one could foreseen the tragedy
that the return of Taiwan would cause rebellions and massacres .
Ceded by the failing the Ching dynasty, the Taiwan Island was a Japanese
colony during 1898 to 1945. As a consequence, the Taiwanese, the immigrants
from mainland China, had experienced nearly one hundred years of Japanese
indoctrination,differing considerably from their motherland in language and
customs. The Taiwanese still welcomed emotionally the Nationalist army units
and the their new governor, Chen I (陳儀)when arrived in 1945.
Nonetheless,the Taiwanese turned into disappoint and anger rapidly. The
Taiwanese economics was facing dire circumstances caused by the Chinese Civil
War that followed World War II. Chen Yi exercised a policy of repression
－controlling goods and materials－to support the Nationalist army in
the Civil War.Leading to social unrest, the policy ignited an event, and turned
into the rebellion. A vendor, Lin Chiang-mai, was beaten by two tobacco
-monopoly agents confiscating illegal cigarettes, and bystanders killing by
agents on February 27th, 1947. Eventually, the angry crowds took over the city
at the next morning and similar rebellions also were stirring in the Island.
Because the Nationalist leaders believed that their rivals－the Communists－
played a very important role in the rebellion, they sent their troops to
repress the revolt－killing and poisoning ten thousands of Taiwanese.
Therefore, we must not allow our civilization to be damaged or humanity to be distorted by war.
