In an anti-China protest, more than 2.5 million people joined hands to form a
500-kilometre (310 mile) human chain stretching the length of Taiwan, ahead of
the island's presidential elections next month.
在一反對中國的活動中，超過二百五十萬的台灣人民手牽手串起了五百公里（三百一十英
里）長的人鍊，綿延縱貫在下個月將舉行大選的台灣土地上。
The government-backed protest was called to highlight the threat posed to the
island by Chinese missiles. The show of strength before the March 20 national
election was designed to boost support for President Chen Shui-bian and for a
referendum that calls for an end to the Chinese missile threat.
這個政府背後支持的抗議活動主要是為了凸顯中國的飛彈對台灣小島的武赫威脅。同時支
持陳水扁總統繼續連任，以及表達對反對中國飛彈威脅的公民投票的贊同。
Polls show that President Chen is slightly behind challenger, Lien Chan of the
Kuomintang Party (KMT). Chen, of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) linked
hands with former Taiwan president Lee Teng-hui, a former KMT standard-bearer
and a pro-independence campaigner.
最近民調顯示陳總統稍微落後這次競選對手--國民黨的連戰。民進黨的陳總統在這次活動
中和前總統（前國民黨主席、台灣獨立社運人士）手牽手。
"This is a historic event crossing ethnic, geographic, partisan, gender and
age boundaries. There is no minority or majority in Taiwan," Lee said, "Let us
hold our hands, a simple but warm act, to tell the world that‘we love Taiwan
and want peace.’"
「這是台灣歷史上一個跨種族、區域、黨派、性別、年齡的事件，不分多數民族或少數民
族」李登輝說「讓我們手牽手，一個簡單但溫暖的行動，告訴世界我們愛台灣、要和平」
The protest was held on the anniversary of February 28, 1947, when thousands of
native Taiwanese were killed by KMT troops [then in control of the mainland]
during a bloody riot against the post-World War II KMT rulers of Taiwan. The
incident poisoned relations between the KMT and native Taiwanese for decades.
In Taiwan’s capital Taipei, thousands were wearing DPP "Yes Taiwan" caps and
gathered at the 2/28 Peace Memorial park, named after the 1947 incident.
這個活動在228事件（發生於1947/2/28）紀念日舉行，當年有數千台灣本土居民在流血衝
突混亂中被當時的統治者(仍控制中國大陸的)國民黨的軍隊所殺害。這個事件多年來也惡
化阻礙了國民黨與台灣人民之間的關係。在台灣的首都台北，有成千民眾戴著民進黨的
「Yes! Taiwan」帽子齊聚228紀念公園（為了紀念1947年的事件而命名）。
The opposition organized its own nationwide event with leader Lien, as part of
a group carrying "peace torches" into a rally in the southern port city of
Kaoshiung. In a statement released before the rallies, KMT candidate Lien Chan
[Vice-President of Taiwan during Lee Teng-hui's administration] made an
appeal to heal the island's social wounds, saying "Everyone on Taiwan is native
Taiwanese… sharing the same destiny."
反對黨也組織了一個全國性的活動，由連戰領導傳遞「和平聖火」進入在高雄的一個大型
集會。會前國民黨總統候選人連戰（李登輝任總統時的副總統）聲明懇求來撫平台灣社會
過去的傷口，他說「在台灣這土地上的人民都是本土台灣人，...，擁有共同的命運」
