二○○○年諾貝爾文學獎得主高行健的翻譯杜特葉表示，中共當局持續施壓
，使得法國政府自動對高行健消音。三月將舉行的巴黎國際書展，以中國文學為主
題，但高行健不在邀請之列，已在法國文學界和輿論界引起討論。
杜特葉夫婦倆（Liliane, NoelDutrait）多年來擔任高行健的法文翻譯，他
們舉證指出，在法國舉辦中國文化年的開端，便收到來自外交部的訊息，要求不讓
高行健的名字公開出現。今年巴黎書展以中國文學為主題，但是竟然沒有邀請高行
健參加，他們兩人因此投書世界報。
世界報十三日刊登杜特葉投書中說，高行健二○○○年十二月在斯德哥爾摩
發表的演講表示，百年以來，被槍殺、監禁、被迫逃亡或參加勞改的作家無數，在
中國歷史上，連帝國王朝時代都比不上。杜特葉指出，難怪中國北京政權從來不把
高行健列為與他們同類。
杜特葉投書表示，大家都說中國大陸已經改變了，事實上，中國大陸的進展
比人們想像的還要慢。杜特葉舉出兩個實例：二○○二年，一所中國大學的出版社
想要出版在法國舉辦的一個中國大陸當代文學研討會的文章，總編輯通知他們：高
行健的名字不能寫進書裡。而研討會上，可以討論高行健的作品，但是不能出版。
另一實例是，中國最近有一本小書介紹歷任諾貝爾文學獎得主，書中內容中竟然自
一九九九年直接跳到二○○一年，不提高行健。
「一個人的聖經」這本高行健寫的中文書名，目前變成他個人形象的代稱。
杜特葉表示，高行健現在只願意回答有關他的著作的問題，其他有關中國文化年的
任何問題，他都不表示意見。

Invite ? Indesirable ? Interdit ? La polemique declenchee autour
de la non-invitation de Gao Xingjian au prochain Salon du livre et des
eventuelles pressions que les autorites chinoises auraient exercees sur
la France est revelatrice de la facon dont les medias peuvent aborder un
ecrivain et son ?uvre.
D'abord, la Chine n'a sans doute jamais eu a exercer la moindre
pression, dans la mesure ou la partie francaise n'a sans doute jamais
avance le nom du Prix Nobel de litterature 2000. Cette "autocensure"
peut s'expliquer par de simples questions "administratives": Gao Xingjian
est citoyen francais depuis 1998, il habite Paris et n'a donc aucune
raison de faire partie d'une delegation d'ecrivains chinois invites et
pris en charge par le Centre national du livre pour le Salon.
Elle peut aussi s'expliquer par une necessite de ne pas froisser les
interlocuteurs chinois. Et, la, on peut effectivement rappeler que le
ministre des affaires etrangeres francais a "omis" de prononcer le nom
de Gao Xingjian lors de la presentation des Annees croisees France-Chine
, alors qu'il a pu mentionner l'ecrivain Francois Cheng, citoyen francais
lui aussi, et membre de l'Academie francaise, ainsi que d'autres ecrivains
chinois residant en France.
N'est-il pas regrettable de se souvenir de l'ecrivain seulement
quand il devient un enjeu politique dans les relations entre Etats ?
Apres la fievre mediatique qui a entoure l'attribution du Nobel en decem-
bre 2000, s'est-on reellement penche sur le contenu des ?uvres ? Deja,
a la parution du Livre d'un homme seul (L'Aube), rares avaient ete les
critiques a avoir note l'importance d'un roman qui denoncait la vraie
nature du regime communiste chinois avec une force comparable a celle d'
un Primo Levi ou d'un Jorge Semprun. Il est vrai que le prix Nobel n'ava-
it pas encore ete attribue a Gao Xingjian...
N'oublions pas la virulence du discours de reception de Stockholm en
decembre 2000, intitule "La raison d'etre de la litterature", ou l'ecri-
vain affirmait :
"Depuis cent ans, le nombre des ecrivains fusilles, emprisonnes, contrai-
nts a l'exil ou condamnes aux travaux forces est incalculable, dans des
proportions que l'on ne peut comparer avec aucune des dynasties imperial-
es de toute l'histoire de la Chine." Rien d'etonnant a ce que le regime
de Pekin n'ait jamais pu considerer Gao Xingjian comme l'un des siens !
"Oui, mais la Chine a change", entend-on dire ca et la... Deux anecd-
otes suffiront a montrer que l'intransigeance de Gao Xingjian n'est pas
vaine et que, dans le domaine ideologique, la Chine a moins evolue qu'on
ne veut bien le croire. En 2002, la maison d'edition d'une grande univer-
site chinoise a voulu publier le texte d'une conference que nous avions
donnee sur la reception de la litterature chinoise contemporaine en
France ; le texte de presentation specifiait que nous etions les traduc-
teurs de plusieurs auteurs chinois, parmi lesquels Gao Xingjian. Veto du
redacteur en chef, par courrier electronique : "On ne peut pas ecrire
le nom de Gao Xingjian." Nous avions pu prononcer son nom devant un publ-
ic d'etudiants et de chercheurs, mais il etait interdit de le publier !
Tout recemment est parue en Chine une brochure qui presente les Prix
Nobel de litterature du monde entier, depuis l'origine. Aussi incroyable
que cela puisse paraitre, on passe directement de l'annee 1999 a l'annee
2001, afin de ne pas mentionner Gao Xingjian !
Quant a lui, l'homme seul, il se sent peu concerne par ce debat qui
tourne autour de son nom et oublie son ?uvre. Il n'ira pas au Salon du
livre. Il se dit pret a repondre aux questions des journalistes et des
critiques sur les livres qu'il a ecrits, mais surement pas sur les aleas
d'une Annee de la Chine en France. Dans deux recueils que les editions
du Seuil publient en mars (Le Queteur de la mort et Sans isme), il s'exp-
rime clairement sur le statut et la liberte de l'ecrivain, la censure et
l'autocensure, ses relations avec son pays natal, et bien d'autres quest-
ions esthetiques et metaphysiques.
Souvenons-nous de ce qu'il disait encore dans son discours de Stockh-
olm : "La litterature ne vise absolument pas a la subversion ; mais
elle est precieuse pour reveler ce qu'on connait peu en l'homme ou pour
montrer le visage reel d'un monde que l'on croit connaitre, mais dont on
est en fait dans l'ignorance. La verite est certainement la qualite la
plus fondamentale de la litterature, et la moins refutable."

Invited? Undesirable? Forbids? The debate released around the non
-invitation of Gao Xingjian to the next Parlor of the book and eventual
pressures that Chinese authorities would have exercised on France is
revealing of the manner of which the media can approach a writer and his
?uvre.
First, China did not doubtless never have to exercise the least
pressure, in the measure where it French left did not doubtless never
advance the name of the Price Nobel literature 2000. This "self-censors-
hip" can explain by of simple questions "administrative" : Gao Xingjian
is French citizen since 1998, it lives Paris and has not therefore no
reason to be part of a delegation of Chinese invited writers and take
charge of by the national Center of the book for the Parlor.
She also can explain by a necessity of not to crumple the Chinese

the French foreign affairs has "omitted" to pronounce the name of Gao

had not been attributed to Gao Xingjian...
Do not forget the virulence of the reception speech of Stockholm in
December 2000, entitled "The reason to be literature", where the writer
asserted: "Since hundred years, the number of the shot, imprisoned write-

ss, in proportions that one cannot compare with none of imperial dynasti-
es of all the history of the. Nothing of astonishing to this that the
Peking system never was able to consider Gao Xingjian as the one of the

"Yes, but China changed", hears one to say ca and there... Two
anecdotes will suffice to show that the intransigence of Gao Xingjian is
not vain and that, in the ideological domain, China less evolved that
one does not want well to believe it. In 2002, the edition house of a
big Chinese university wanted to publish the text of a lecture that we
had given on the reception of the Chinese contemporary literature in
France; the presentation text specified that we were the translators of
several Chinese authors, among which these Gao Xingjian. Veto of the

ngjian." We had been able to pronounce his name in front of a public of
students and of researchers, but it was forbidden to publish it! All

order not to mention Gao Xingjian!
For his part, the single man, it feels not very concerned by this
debate that revolves around his name and forgets his ?uvre. It will not
go to the Parlor of the book. It says himself ready to reply to the
questions of the journalists and critics on the books that it wrote, but
surely not on the hazards of a Year of the China in France. In two
anthologies that the editions of the Threshhold publish in March (The
Collector of the death and Without isme), it clearly expresss himself on
the statute and the liberty of the writer, the censorship and self-censo-
rship, its relations with his natal, and many other country aesthetic
and metaphysical questions.
Do we remember of this that it said again in his speech of Stockholm
: "The literature does not aim absolutely to the subversion; but she is
precious to reveal this that one known little in the man or to show the
real face of a world that one believes to know, but of which one is some
does in the ignorance. The truth is certainly the quality more basic of
the literature, and the less refutable."
