Boswell denies calling Wong 'China'
Nationals senator Ron Boswell has denied calling federal Climate Change
Minister Penny Wong 'China' during a Senate hearing on climate change.
But he admits directing it at senior public servant Martin Parkinson,
the secretary of Senator Wong's department.
'I wasn't referring to Penny and I'm sure she knows the connotations
I was using,' Senator Boswell told ABC radio on Tuesday.
'I was using it on Martin Parkinson.'
Senator Boswell said he wasn't racist and his use of the word 'China'
was nothing more than a bit of rhyming slang.
It had nothing to do with Senator Wong, who is of Malaysian heritage, he said.
'I certainly wouldn't reflect on Penny's decendancy.'
He said the expression had long been a part of his vocabulary and he'd
never been pulled up on it before.
'I haven't got a racist bone in my body,' Senator Boswell said.
''It was just the old slang of the dog and the bone and the phone, and
China plate, my mate and that's the way I used it.
'It wasn't intended for her. It was intended for Parkinson. Probably
if I'd been a bit more thoughtful I wouldn't have used It.'
He said he'd become frustrated during the hearing by Dr Parkinson's refusal
to directly respond to his questions.
Senator Boswell became heated on Monday during a Senate hearing on climate
change and accused Senator Wong and senior public servant Martin Parkinson
of blocking his questions.
'You are making this a high farce, now just watch it China,' Senator Boswell
thundered at the witnesses.
Sue Butler, the editor of Macquarie Dictionary, said the term
China was a bit of Cockney rhyming slang'
that Australia had picked up.
'China plate's a mate,' she told ABC radio on Tuesday.
Asked if it could be used in a racist or derogatory way,
she said: 'No. It's just a very old piece of Australian
slang which I would associate these days with a bush culturerather
than a city culture'.
She said the term was a feature of late colonial, early 1900s
Australian slang, and had survived to this day.
