Taiwan's shooting suspect named
Taiwanese officials say they believe they have identified the man who shot
President Chen Shui-bian. The president was slightly injured when a shot was
fired at him on the eve of presidential elections a year ago.
Chen Yi-hsiung, whose wife says he confessed to the shooting, committed suicide
a few days later.
Police say the man had left notes blaming the president for Taiwan's economic
situation and wrote a will shortly before he killed himself.
Election influence
"I feel depressed. After Chen Shui-bian became the president, the economy
turned bad and we could not sell the house," one note read.
"If Chen is re-elected, I am old and cannot change anything," read another note
from the man, who was in his 50s. Head of the criminal investigation, Hou
You-yi, said, "We looked for his motive and we found he was displeased with the
social reality."
President Chen was slightly injured by a bullet as he campaigned in an open-top
jeep in the southern city of Tainan.
He went on to win re-election by a margin of less than 0.2%.
Opposition supports say the shooting swung the vote in Mr Chen's favour.
Police said an investigation of the weapon used linked it back to the suspect,
who bought a handgun shortly before the crime.
They say after his wife saw footage of her husband at the scene of the crime
she confronted him and he told her: "I did it and I will handle it myself."
The man drowned himself a few days later.
