Lockheed PAC-3 Contract Includes International Sales

WASHINGTON — Lockheed Martin Corp. won a $532 million contract to provide
upgraded Patriot missile interceptors to the U.S. Army and to the Netherlands
and Japan, according to a company official.



The deal represents the first sale of the Patriot Advanced Capability-3
(PAC-3) missile to U.S. allies, said Mike Trotsky, vice president of air and
missile defense systems at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Systems
in Dallas.



Lockheed Martin made its first international sale of PAC-3 equipment in
August when it struck a $34 million deal with the Netherlands for systems
needed to upgrade the country’s existing Patriot missile launchers to handle
the upgraded version.



Lockheed Martin’s new contract calls for the company to deliver 156 PAC-3
missiles to the Army, 32 of which will be sent to the Netherlands and 16 to
Japan, Trotsky told reporters during a Jan. 31 conference call.



The missiles will incorporate changes made to avoid fratricide incidents like
those that occurred in Iraq in 2003, Trotsky said.



Lockheed Martin also is in discussions with Tokyo regarding establishing a
PAC-3 co-production facility in Japan, Trotsky said.



Other countries that have expressed interest in buying the PAC-3 rockets
include Germany, Taiwan, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, Trotsky said. The company
expects to sign deals with those countries within the next five years, he
said.



Lockheed Martin also is working on a new PAC-3 variant called the Missile
Segment Enhancement, which will have a longer range and  be capable of
engaging targets at higher altitudes than the current version, Trotsky said.
That system was expected to make its first test flight in 2006, but added
requirements have pushed the demonstration into 2008, he said.



Those requirements include improving the interceptor’s resistance to
detonation if struck by a bullet during battle, Trotsky said.
