Regarding the BBS discussion of A-Mei's, "不要騙我〞, it was rather
interesting and very informative.
I've actually learned several things from that BBS discussion.
First, there are many people (Chinese) all over the world that are
becoming more aware of different kinds of music now than before. That
really impresses me because it proves to me that the level or the 音樂水
準 of the public is actually quite high now. By "high" I do not mean to
say that they are listening to a higher class of music but that they are
much more aware and educated in terms of what's going on musically in
the world. Music is a form of culture and I think being more aware and
concerned just shows how in touch you are with culture and society.
Second, I realized that there are more and more people out there that
care about music and especially it's originality. Unfortunately, music
has become less and less original in the past few years. We don't hear
as many truly innovative and original songs as we did in the 60's, 70's
and 80's. Even worse it is almost hip and cool to "bite" or copy (using
sampling technology) other songs made famous by other artists as shown
by artists like Puff Daddy who even brag about "takin' hits from the
80's". For me, it has always been about making music that is not only
creative and original in sound, production and song but also in content
or lyric. I think we always need to have a message in music and a fresh
way of delivering it. But song writers, arrangers, producers also fear
flying too fast and high as we fear that our audiences my not be able or
wish to keep up. We do not wish to lose our audience and their support
but we are posed by the dilemma of still trying to be innovative and
original. We want to do new things but sometimes being too new or even
original is a punishment in itself. Not many great artists were really
appreciated while they were still alive. It's always a risk but I think
every step we take forward is better than two steps backwards. New
things and modes of thought always challenge the status quo and norm in
society and that has always been one of the roles of the creative
individual.
Regarding the debate that 〞不要騙我〞 sounds like Aaliyah or 張宇,
yes, I would be lying if I said there weren't any similarities between
them. However, I think the important point is whether you copy
something intentionally or whether it is simply part of your writing
process and "train of thought". When I'm writing a song I don't say to
myself, "I'm gonna steal or copy this part from the Chorus of this other
song". Sometimes things just flow and even sometimes things develop in
your head without you knowing it sounding like something else. If two
people have the same looking nose on their face would you say that they
automatically look alike? You must consider not only his facial
features but his family background, his personality, ideology, etc.
Similarly, there is much more to a song than a few shared common notes.
Also, it is also crucial to bring out whether there is something new or
different about a work (a painting, song, play, movie, book, etc.) that
seems to be similar to another? Think about Shakespeare, isn't almost
every modern movie plot nowadays an exact copy of some Shakespeare
drama? But would you say that they are the same? With 〞不要騙我〞I
was not only going for a certain arrangement, sound and feeling but I
was also trying to get (more important) the lyrics and my message across
in a very direct way. I wanted to say something in a pop song that I
felt was never said directly enough because I was angry and discontent
at how our society treated men and women. I hope that people perhaps
would pay more attention to the entire message and package than to one
part of a song that maybe similar to another work. I think these are
more realistic expectations of an artist and his work. These are all my
thoughts on this issue.
