The film -- titled Transmission and based on the 1995 book penned by Curtis' widow Deborah -- is being penned by writer/director Michael Stock. Filming is tentatively planned to begin by late fall. "I've always loved Joy Division," says producer Amy Hobby. "When Michael Stock, a young writer/director and music fanatic came to me and suggested the project, I said, 'That sounds fantastic. What can I read?' And he gave me the book that Deborah wrote. And after reading it, I thought we should try to get the rights to the biography." In May of 1980, on the eve of his band's first-ever U.S. tour, the enigmatic Ian Curtis -- suffering from depression and epilepsy -- hanged himself. At the time of his death the singer-songwriter was said to be in a love triangle with his wife and a mistress. "I think Ian was sort of like all those characters like James Dean, who live fast and die young," opines Hobby. "They leave something behind that we can't forget. Ian was really unique in that he was epileptic, believed he was getting these transmissions from God, and had something to say at a young age. "Without ruining the integrity of the project, I'd like to see it in wide release," adds Hobby. "I think it deserves more than just a select audience. I can't comment on actors and actresses that have expressed interest yet, but I'm certain that we'll need to search long and hard -- worldwide -- to find the right male lead for Ian's character." Hobby also says that Curtis' widow will stay on with the project as an associate producer. "Both Michael Stock and I met with her in Manchester over Christmas, and talked to her about the film. And she's been integral in shedding further light on Ian and his life during our script research, and she'll be with us all the way." JOHN D.
