Billy Corgan Joins New Order For Area: One, Japanese Date
May 23, 2001, 1:15 pm PT
New Order has been in discussions to recruit former Smashing Pumpkins
mastermind Billy Corgan to join the band on guitar for its upcoming stint on
Moby's Area: One festival tour, as well as a date at the Fuji Festival in J
apan in July, according to a source close to the band.
Corgan, who also makes an appearance on the track "Turn My Way" from New
Order's upcoming album, NEWORDERGETREADY (its first since 1993's Republic),
is a longtime fan and will fill a live void left by longtime keyboardist
Gillian Gilbert. Gilbert is taking an indefinite break from the band to care
for her and drummer Stephen Morris' 18-month-old daughter who is recovering
from a bout with a serious illness. Full confirmation on Corgan's appearances,
however, could not be made at press time as the singer-guitarist is currently
in transit in Asia.
New Order plays the Fuji Rock Festival at Naeba, Japan, July 28 and will hit
the West Coast dates of Moby's Area: One beginning July 31 in Mountain View,
Calif. (allstar, April 24). An as-yet-unannounced U.K. gig, with Corgan
possibly on board, is also in the cards.
In addition to Corgan on guitar, New Order has also enlisted the talents of
former Marion guitarist Phil Cunningham, who has also worked with Johnny Marr
and Bernard Sumner's Electronic.
NEWORDERGETREADY, which also includes guest appearances by the Chemical
Brothers and Primal Scream, is due on Reprise Records in October.
