Before this film, I totally had no idea who Klaus Nomi was.
The first time that I came across him was through the FLM magazine,
which is a free magazine available in Boston's Kendall cinema. The
very article that I read is available in the following link:
http://www.movienet.com/nomisong.html. When I browsed through this
article, it was Nomi's picture that immediately caught my eyes -
He looked like a mixture of the dummy from Kraftwerk, some character
in 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' and a weird entertainer in 18th
century. My first impression was quite right: He, Klaus Nomi, was
from German, studied opera singing in Berlin, and did opera synth pop
in 80s' New Wave period. As a self - claimed 80s fan, how could I
possibly miss this film! So I came to see 'Nomi Song' with another
80s fan Shizuru during her Boston visit.
Shizuru and I couldn't stop talking about this film after we walked
away from the cinema. About his life, about his death, about his art,
and about how lonely he looked when he put the heavy make-up on his
face...Nomi's life was like a shooting star - rose so rapidly, and fell
so quickly. Released his first album in 1981, the second was followed
in 1982, and he died in 1983. As one of the first celebrity died in AIDS,
he passed away without any friend or relative by his side - people were
afraid...They didn't know what kind of disease it was and the term 'gay
cancer' was too heavy to bear. This creature from the outer space just
started to save the human race for such a short while and then he turned
all his dreams, hopes, love, and loneliness into ashes and left them
floating like stardust.
20 years after his death, the film 'Nomi Song' brought two Taiwan girls
into Nomi's world. I turned google up side down to search for Nomi and
have ordered his first album. During the web surfing, I surprisingly
found that Morrissey is also a Nomi fan. In his 'Under the influence'
album, Nomi's 'Death' was in the track listing. What a coincidence! It's
like everything is linked together and it seems like a fate for me to step
into Nomi's world of art.
