IAN CURTIS' life is to be celebrated in MANCHESTER on May 18, marking 25
years since the JOY DIVISION singer’s death.
BBC 6 Music will be holding a special 'Transmission' screening at 7pm on the
BBC’s Big Screen in the city’s Exchange Square.
The screening will feature rare Joy Division footage, including their
performances at the Manchester Apollo in October 1979 and at the Effenaar in
Eindhoven in January 1980.
Also included will be a documentary originally made for Wired TV in 1988,
which looks back at the legacy of Joy Division and the effect Curtis’ death
had on the remainder of the band – who later went on to form New Order.
The documentary features interviews with Alan Erasmus, Tony Wilson, Bernard
Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, Paul Morley and their late manager Rob
Gretton.
BBC 6 Music will also be celebrating the life of Curtis on air throughout May
18, with classic Peel Sessions from the BBC archive, unusual cover version of
Joy Division tracks by contemporary artists as well as interviews with Tony
Wilson and photographer Anton Corbijn.
Curtis committed suicide in 1980, aged just 23
