Pacey centre back Jorge Andrade is adept at bringing the ball out
of defence and his distribution is second to none.
Andrade, who can also play as a midfield anchorman, has a cool
temperament and has earned rave reviews for his performances in La
Liga and the UEFA Champions League with Deportivo La Coruna.
The 25-year-old started his career with Lisbon club Estrela Amadora,
playing 53 games over three seasons but he soon caught the attention
of FC Porto, who took him north in the summer of 2002.
After two successful seasons with the 'Dragons', winning the Portuguese
Cup in 2001 and then the Super Cup, the defender began attracting the
interest of a number of top European clubs.
Indeed, Spanish giants Deportivo La Coruna beat off interest from the
likes of Internazionale and Arsenal for his signature in the summer
of 2002, paying ?13 million for his services and tying him to a
seven-year contract.
But things did not go well for Andrade, as he broke his foot on his La
Liga debut against Real Betis. He returned to make 11 appearances but
suffered a leg injury against Real Sociedad in April 2003.
Andrade has subsequently recovered from those setbacks to become one of
the most talked-about defenders in Europe.
He made his Portugal debut in a friendly against France in April 2001
and was a member of the 2002 World Cup squad, appearing as a substitute
in the defeats by United States and the Korean Republic.
Andrade scored his first international goal in an abandoned friendly
against Angola in November 2001.
