Goalkeeper GUSTAVO MUNUA won a silver medal with Uruguay at the FIFA World Yout
h Championship Malaysia 1997, when Uruguay were beaten by Argentina. He made hi
s debut in the national team in 2000 in a 2-0 friendly win over Hungary. With N
acional de Montevideo, Munua won the Uruguayan league championships in 1998, 20
00 and 2001.

Deportivo La Coruna were interested in this player since Lendoiro saw him playi
ng with the national team's sub-21. Despite his age, Munua is still older than
Uruguay's first-choice goalkeeper Fabian Carini. He is ready to battle it out w
ith Carini for the regular numer one spot for years to come. A club career with
 Juventus in Serie A gives Carini the edge at the moment and he is also known f
or his capacity to pull off the spectacular save. In Munua though, Uruguay have
 an equally solid replacement. He is safe at the back and still has his best ye
ars ahead of him.

He was the first Deportivo signing with Makaay's transfer money. The internatio
nal shot-topper visited A Coruna with Nacional to play the Teresa Herrera tourn
ament. The results of his team were a 3-0 loss against Deportivo and a 2-2 draw
 in the other match. No matter the 5 goals, Gustavo Munua made a good impresion
 with his amazing feet technique. But the season 2003/2004 didn't saw Munua muc
h on the pitch as Molina showed great form in this period. Munua did well in th
e matches he did play, but only time will tell if Deportivo made a good deal in
 the summer of 2003.

Munua was the first ever goalkeeper who scored from a free kick in Uruguay and
he has the record of defending Nacional's goal for 937 minutes without leaking
a goal. Once he played a league match against Maldonado and he fractured his fo
rearm, but he continued playing untill the end of the match.
