The Straits Times Life! People Monday, January 7, 2008 Tay Suan Chiang Deserts sounds Never mind the awkward banter - Deserts Chang comes to life when she sings live with her guitar CRITICS have hailed her as the next indie darling but for now Taiwanese singer Deserts Chang is still not comfortable coping with life under the spotlight. This is apparent at Dragonfly at St. James Power Station last Saturday where she is distinctly awkward bantering with the crowd at an hour-long mini-concert. Indeed, the 26-year-old says humbly of her first performance here: "My jokes are not funny, I'll bring my band along next time, they're much funnier." But the former pub singer-turned-recording artiste is more confident when she straps on a guitar to perform My Life Will, from her first album, in a strong, clear, raspy voice. Her second album, My Dear... I Still Don't Know, was released last July. Chang, who has been performing since she was 16 and composing since 13, says "the feeling of performing live is irreplaceable, what happens during a performance is unexpected". In between sips of Tiger beer, which she says "is not bad", she talks about how she got her name. Back in high school, which she left because she could not accept the restrictions, it was trendy for students to adopt English names. "But I couldn't see myself adopting a name such as Barbara," she says with a laugh. Instead, she chose Deserts because she is fascinated by deserts. "A desert looks bare with just sand but there are signs of life in it." For her second album, she put in extra effort to compose using the electric guitar. Asked if she plays other instruments, she breaks into a giggle and says: "I know very little of the piano." "But what I would really like to learn is the erhu so I can play for my parents," she adds, referring to the traditional Chinese instrument. Chang, who has two siblings, says she is close to her parents. Her father is a retired well-known politician. Which was also why she adopted her stage name, Deserts Chang, because she does not want to ride on his reputation. But she says one day she hopes to use her real name, Chiao An-pu. With her long hair, almond-shaped eyes, clear skin and slim frame, she doesn't look out of place in front of the TV camera. Asked if she will venture into acting one day, she says: "Perhaps as a film actress because I like to watch art films." -------------------------------------------------- 這是新加坡英文報章的報導 如果不能PO我就自D 更正: 報導裡說張懸開場唱的第一首歌是My Life Will 但其實是無狀態. -------------------------------------------------- -- I want somebody to share Share the rest of my life Share my innermost thoughts Know my intimate details Somebody -- Depeche Mode -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 58.182.203.224
