This morning, we offer you another Schilling debate to spread over your bagels: Schilling has clearly taken his game to another level over the last year. He won 22 games - five more than his previous career high - last season for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was co-MVP of the World Series. He was runner-up for the National League Cy Young Award. This season, he is off to a 7-1 start. The debate: Would Schilling be as good as he is now had he stayed in Philadelphia, where there is no Randy Johnson to keep up with? We solicited the opinions of four people who know him well - Arizona teammate and longtime former opponent Mark Grace; Arizona manager Bob Brenly; Phillies coach John Vukovich, who used to help Schilling prepare his game plans; and finally, Schilling himself. Grace: "No, I don't think he would be as good. He's got someone here that he didn't have in Philadelphia. With all due respect to Tommy Greene and Terry Mulholland - they're good pitchers, but they're no Randy Johnson. "Curt was the ace in Philadelphia for years, but on this club he's no longer considered the best pitcher on the team, and I think he's taken that as a challenge. He sees Randy as the dominant pitcher, and it brings out the best in him. He used to be just a power guy with some splitters. Now, his off-speed stuff is so much more dominant than it used to be. "Would Curt be this good if he was still in Philadelphia? It's a good question. Put it this way, he's always been an all-star caliber guy but he wasn't as good as he is now when he was in Philadelphia." Brenly: "I don't know. It's hard to say. The way he prepares and competes, I think he'd be this good on a staff full of A-ball pitchers. I can't say if Curt and Randy try to top each other, but it certainly looks like that at times." Vukovich: "He'd be just as good. Last year, he would have been in a pennant chase and that would have spurred him on. I'm sure he and Randy feed off each other, but if he were pitching in big games with us, he would have been the same animal. "Look at the way he got up every fifth day when we weren't that good. Put him in a situation like we were in last year and he'd be sky-high, just like he was for Arizona last season." Schilling: "I don't know. I don't know. I feel like I'm a better pitcher now than I've ever been. There have been a lot of influences since leaving Philadelphia. I'd like to think being around the people I have been for the past year and a half might have helped. But I would like to think I could have done it here, too." There you have it. Some say leaving Philadelphia was the best thing that ever happened to Schilling, some say it had no effect, others are not sure. One final opinion: Schilling is one of the most competitive, driven players in the game. Smelling a World Series and keeping up with Johnson definitely fueled this guy's fire last year, and it continues to now. He would still be very, very good in Philadelphia, but we're not sure he would be this good.
