Arizona's first-round pick this year, Conor Jackson,
who was a third baseman in college at Cal-Berkeley, settling into?
He's got an amazing 20 doubles in his first 29 games
while playing mostly DH and a little OF with the Yakima Bears in
short season A-ball.
A:
Jackson is now up to a .319 average with a .411 OBP and a .560 SLG at
short-season Yakima in the Northwest League.
In 53 games, he has 30 doubles, with a 29/37 BB/K ratio in 207 at-bats.
Very solid performance as he adjusts to pro pitching,
and the huge number of doubles is a sign of much more power to come.
Once he makes the full transition from metal to
wood next year, he should be quite an offensive force.
Jackson has played 13 games in the outfield, but hasn't played any
third base or first base (his college positions) since signing.
Obviously he'd have more value a third base, but questions about
his range, as well as an arm injury that hurt his production a
bit in college this year, have moved him off the hot corner.
The plan now is for him to be a right fielder, although he needs to
shake the sore shoulder that bothered him all spring in order
to complete the transition. The D-Backs have other prospects they
like at third base, so right field is probably Jackson's
best bet down the road. I am very impressed with his bat, and if his
shoulder is OK next spring, he could advance quickly.
