Carlos Quentin has quietly become one of the game’s top prospects, hitting
.332 with 21 homers in 125 games between Single-A and Double-A in 2004, and
.301 with 21 homers in 136 games at Triple-A in 2005. A solid defensive
corner outfielder who draws plenty of walks, gets hit by a ton of pitches,
and even steals a few bases, Quentin looks like a complete player.
18) Conor Jackson | 1B/OF | Arizona Diamondbacks | AGE: 24 | ETA: Now
The Diamondbacks dealing Troy Glaus this offseason clears some of their
logjam at the four corner positions, opening the door for Conor Jackson
to see quite a bit of time at first base. He may still end up platooning
there with Tony Clark in 2006, but expect Jackson to hold down the everyday
job by 2007. He’s not a huge power threat, but should post big batting
averages (he hit .354 at Triple-A) and develop into a 15-20 homer guy.
21) Stephen Drew | SS | Arizona Diamondbacks | AGE: 23 | ETA: 2007
The younger brother of J.D. Drew, Stephen Drew fell to the Diamondbacks in
the middle of the first round back in 2004 and not surprisingly ended up
signing with Arizona at the last minute. His pro career started off hot in
2005, as Drew hit .389 against overmatched competition at Single-A, but he
hit just .218 after a promotion to Double-A. He’s got all the tools and
figures to move quickly through Arizona’s system.
23) Chris Young | OF | Arizona Diamondbacks | AGE: 22 | ETA: 2007
The White Sox chose Brian Anderson over Chris Young as their center fielder
of the future, dealing Young to the Diamondbacks for Javier Vazquez this
offseason. Arizona has a ton of young offensive talent, but what they didn’t
have before Young’s arrival was a top-notch center-field prospect. Young hit
.277 with 26 homers, 41 doubles, 70 walks, and 32 steals in 126 games at Double
-A in 2005, despite not turning 22 until September.
