Arizona Diamondbacks
Though they have turned to veterans for immediate help since there inception
in 1998, with acquisitions of players such as Matt Williams, Jay Bell, Luis
Gonzalez, Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Tony Clark, Troy Glaus, and Shawn
Green, the Diamondbacks' future now rests on their farm system, which has
improved steadily over the past three years thanks to some astute drafts and
international signings under scouting director Mike Rizzo. With players such
as Chad Tracy, Brandon Webb, and Jose Valverde establishing themselves as
quality major-leaguers and impact prospects Stephen Drew, Carlos Quentin,
Conor Jackson, and Miguel Montero knocking on the door to the big leagues the
future of the D’Backs looks great. Their farm system has also been able to
develop useful players such as Andy Green (PCL MVP) and Scott Hairston who
could be used as trading chips to acquire pieces for a playoff push or be
valuable on the major league bench. The one pressing need now for the D’Backs
organization is to sign 2005 #1 pick Justin Upton, a 5-tool talent who has
threatened to go play for a JUCO team if he doesn’t get the contract he so
desires. I think the D’Backs need to give this guy what he wants and bite the
bullet, as he is too good of a talent to be left unsigned and go back into the
2006 Draft pool.
