Micah Owings – RHP Diamondbacks – If he wasn’t tearing up Double-A batters
right now, Owings could just as easily be putting the hurt on Southern League
pitching. An imposing presence at 6’5” and 225 pounds, Owings was a two-way
player at Georgia Tech before filling the same role at Tulane for his junior
season. Known for a long swing that led to some towering blasts, Owings
delivered 18 homers and a .719 slugging percentage in his lone season for
Tulane. Fears that the powerful swing would lead to too many strikeouts and a
low batting average meant that many clubs thought he’d profile better on the
mound at the next level. The Diamondbacks agreed and selected Owings in the
3rd round of the 2005 draft as a pitcher.
Owings had a solid 2004 campaign pitching for the Yellow Jackets, but he showed
substantial improvement upon arriving at Tulane. He cut his home runs and walks
allowed in half while improving his strikeout rate to over one per inning.
The result was a 12-4 record with a 3.24 ERA and a 135/25 K/BB ratio in 129 2/3
innings. Part of that improvement could be attributed to the league switch from
the ACC to Conference USA, but it was still an encouraging development.
Assigned to High-A Lancaster as a reliever after signing, Owings posted a 30/4
K/BB ratio with a 2.45 ERA in 22 innings of work. The Diamondbacks saw his
success there and decided to challenge the right-hander by sending him directly
to Double-A Tennessee to start his 2006 campaign. And so far he’s met the
challenge by going 4-2 with a 3.61 ERA and 47/13 K/BB ratio in 47 1/3 innings.
Owings was considered a somewhat raw hurler when coming out of college, but
many teams thought focusing strictly on pitching would result in improved
production. Still, it is somewhat surprising to see him succeeding at Double-A
while many college arms from the draft are still in Single-A. That he’s
adjusted so quickly to professional baseball is rather encouraging.
Owings utilizes a low-90s fastball to go with a quality change and developing
slider to retire the opposition. He’ll probably need a full year at Double-A
and at least a half season at Triple-A Tucson, but Owings should see the majors
sometime late next season. A spot in the rotation during 2008 is likely,
although how many speed bumps he hits on the way to the majors will determine
if its at the start of the season or somewhere in the middle. If everything
goes well he’ll end up as a fine No. 3 starter for the Diamondbacks and a
useful asset in fantasy leagues, particularly in NL-only formats.
