Starting first baseman Chris Carter is playing the position that has led a
number of other Tucson Sidewinders straight to the major leagues. Lyle Overbay
excelled at first in 2002 and 2003, and he's now the starter in Toronto.
Conor Jackson, the Arizona Diamondbacks' starter, learned to play the position
in Tucson last year. All three have something else in common: They can hit.
Carter went 3 for 4 with two doubles and six RBIs in Tucson's 11-10, 10-inning
loss to Las Vegas on Friday night before 7,491 fans at Tucson Electric Park.
"People have told me that I remind them of Lyle Overbay," Carter said. "His
power, I think, is what people see in me. But I have a long way to go." Both
Overbay and Carter bat left-handed. Carter, 23, was taken by Arizona in round
17 of the June 2004 draft. Overbay had 89 major league games with Arizona before
being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2004. Many people thought it was to
make room for Jackson. Whether the D'backs will make room for Carter is less
clear. Jackson had just 40 games with the Diamondbacks last year. Even with a
.200 batting average, the D'backs put him on their 2006 opening day roster.
The organization appears to be committed to Jackson.
"It feels great to be mentioned with those guys," Carter said. "But it's tough
because I don't know what is going to happen with me. The Diamondbacks have
both Conor and Tony Clark at first base." Carter is hitting .290 with 11 home
runs and 46 RBIs on the season. He said the change to first base was difficult.
"I hated it at first. I would be out there at least four days a week, taking
thousands of ground balls. It was tough, but it made me better." Carter, a
designated hitter at Stanford, played left field before learning first base at
Double-A Tennessee. "My goal is to play first base the way a Golden Glove
shortstop plays his position," he said. "I'm working on my speed every day.
I know I'm average, but I want to be better than average."
Tucson manager Chip Hale said Carter still has a way to go in learning the
position. "Carter is just a great hitter who we're trying to find a position,"
Hale said. "He has to improve. He's not where we want him as a major league
first baseman. "Hitting. Obviously, he could be doing that in the major
leagues right now." Carter also is making strides against Triple-A pitchers.
"In Double-A, the pitchers weren't coming after me a lot. I was swinging at
bad pitches, and I wasn't getting my walks," said Carter, who leads the team
in walks and RBIs. "Here, I've made the adjustment to not swing at those bad
pitches and am getting a lot of walks now."
