PHOENIX -- The first half has been a roller-coaster ride for the Diamondbacks.
They were on top of the world -- or at least the National League West -- when
June began, and were at the bottom when it ended. They've experienced the highs
of a seven-game winning streak and 10 wins in 12 games, and they've suffered
through a stretch in June in which they went 3-20.
There was also the Jason Grimsley scandal, which led to Luis Gonzalez being
unfairly brought into the issue.
"I think our whole team was waiting for July to come, to be honest with you,"
Gonzalez said. "June was just a terrible month for us individually, and
personally for me."
June is over, the second half is here, and it's time to find out whether the
D-Backs are the team that went 18-9 in May, the one that went 8-20 in June,
or somewhere in between.
Club MVP: Catcher Johnny Estrada has been everything the D-Backs hoped for
offensively, and then some. He's near the club lead in RBIs despite hitting
in the No. 7 spot in the lineup.
Call him 'Ace': Brandon Webb started the year 8-0, before hitting a rough
patch. He is clearly the ace of the staff, and the one pitcher the D-Backs
can most rely on to give a quality outing every time out.
Biggest problem: Pitching. The D-Backs need to get more consistent outings
from their starters in the second half.
Biggest surprise: That Damion Easley would have as many homers (six) as
Gonzalez in almost 200 fewer at-bats.
Team needs: The D-Backs need a couple of starters to step up and provide
consistently good outings along with Webb. It would also be a help if the
middle of the order would go on a tear that could carry the team for a
prolonged stretch.
Oh, doctor: Injuries have not played a big role in the D-Backs' first half
performance.
Juan Cruz -- Missed a month with a sore right shoulder and returned just
prior to the break.
Scott Hairston -- Hurt his right shoulder in his first game after being
called up from Triple-A Tucson.
Brandon Medders -- Missed the first three weeks of the season with
inflammation in his back, but has not experienced any injury-related
problems since. He hasn't, however, pitched as well as he did last year.
Terry Mulholland -- Veteran lefty spent two separate stints on the DL and was
released in late June.
Russ Ortiz -- Was on the DL for more than a month with a calf strain. Was
ineffective before and after the injury, and the club released him in late
June.
He said it: "Thank God. Good riddance to June." -- D-Backs manager Bob Melvin
on the final day of June, a month that saw his team go 8-20.
Mark your calendar: Aug. 14-17 at Colorado; Aug. 18-20 at San Diego; Aug. 21-23
at San Francisco.
Fearless second-half prediction: The D-Backs will call up some of their top
prospects before September, and they will give the club an energy boost.
結論:六月打的太差了,需要先發投手,傷兵部份還ok扣掉Ortiz和Mulholland已離隊
現在只剩下Hairston在養傷。
