The Diamondbacks could be on the verge of losing Mike Rizzo, the highly
regarded scouting director who helped stock what most consider one of the
best farm systems in baseball.
According to major league sources, Rizzo is expected to interview for a pair
of assistant general manager positions in the coming weeks, one of which is
with the Washington Nationals.
Rizzo, who declined comment, will interview in Washington this week for a job
working alongside Nationals General Manager Jim Bowden.
Another club also contacted the Diamondbacks and was granted permission to
speak to Rizzo.
Rizzo, who was promoted to vice president of scouting operations in November,
aspires to be a general manager, and moving beyond scouting amateur players
and into a high-ranking front office position would be a step in that
direction.
As scouting director, Rizzo has presided over the past six drafts for the
Diamondbacks. In March, Baseball America rated Arizona's farm system
No.1 in baseball.
