The Diamondbacks signed former Arizona State right-hander Daryl Arreola to a
free agent contract Tuesday, adding pitching depth to the organization.
“We had some pitching needs,"D-Backs manager of minor league operations A.J.
Hinch said.
Arreola, a native of Gilbert who attended Mesa High and Chandler-Gilbert
Community College, led ASU with a 2.80 ERA in 19 relief appearances this season.
He struck out 32 in 35 innings while limiting opponents to a .212 batting
average.
Arreola is expected to pitch out of the bullpen in the minor leagues, where
the D-Backs also plan to use right-hander Kevin Thompson, a fourth-round pick
out of Pensacola JC signed last week, who was used regularly this season and
had elbow surgery earlier in his career.
The D-Backs, in fact, plan to adopt a policy of keeping a short leash on
college pitchers in their first pro season, Hinch said, especially those who
had a heavy college workload.
That group includes No. 1 draftee Max Scherzer, sandwich pick Brooks Brown,
third-rounder Dallas Buck, fifth-rounder Hector Ambriz and ninth-rounder
Edward Romero, all college starters.
“We want them to pitch, but we don’t want to pile on 80 or 90 innings on
top’’ of their college innings, Hinch said. “They have already pitched
three-quarters of a season.’’
