Making his second start for the Diamondbacks Thursday, Juan Cruz tossed five
scoreless innings against the Cubs, striking out seven batters. Cruz is now
1-0 with a 0.90 ERA in two starts, posting a 10-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio
while allowing a total of just eight baserunners in 10 innings.
The A's loved Cruz when they got him from the Braves as part of the Tim
Hudson trade last off-season, but soured on him quickly when he struggled
out of the bullpen and dealt him to the Diamondbacks for Brad Halsey this
spring. However, Cruz has fantastic stuff and a previous record of success
in the NL, and went 5-1 with a 2.40 ERA in 13 starts at Triple-A last season.
Given his ability to rack up strikeouts313 in 329.2 career big-league innings铘
and the fact he's probably locked down a spot in Arizona's rotation with back-
to-back impressive outings, Cruz is a must-grab in NL-only leagues and is even
worth a serious look if you're short on pitching in mixed leagues.
