Counsell’s broken rib appears to be in the exact spot where Counsell was hit
by a pitch by Colorado’s Jose Mesa in the last game before the All-Star break
Sunday.
Counsell arrived at the ball park Friday with a black-and-blue mark on his
right side, and later suffered the broken rib in that area while swinging
through a 1-0 Matt Wise fastball in the seventh inning of the D-Backs’ 4-3
victory.
The D-Backs, who learned the severity of the injury during the game, announced
afterward that shortstop Stephen Drew will be recalled from Triple-A Tucson.
“It’s obviously the downside to this game,’’ Melvin said.
“I don’t know if that (hit by pitch) had anything to do with it. We’re not
really sure. Yesterday he was feeling a little bit of soreness in there, which
is common when you get hit like he did.’’
Counsell is “a guy who’s gone out there for me and played 110 percent of
every game and been so instrumental in what we do here, for him to be out for
an extended period obviously is hard,’’ Melvin said.
Asked if Drew, the 15th player taken in the 2004 draft and a member of Baseball
America’s first-half minor league Triple-A All-Star team, will start today,
Melvin said: “We’ll see.’’
Damion Easley, who homered off scheduled Milwaukee starter Chris Capuano on
April 9, is the likely starter. Easley is 3-for-4 in his career against Capuano.
