Lancaster JetHawks
With the promotion of Chico and then Smith, the JetHawks rotation has been
gutted. The best remaining starters are AJ Shappi and Matt Green but this is
a team that will need to outscore their opponents to win as their ERA is the
worst in the league. The bullpen has struggled as well with Mark Rosen being
the only reliever with an ERA under 6 for the month of June.
Eddie Baeza
Jun 9.00 2.33
2 Starts, 0-1, 9 IP, 15 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 5/6 K/BB
Baeza found out that a promotion from Low A to High A may not be a blessing
when you are pitching in Lancaster.
Matt Green
Apr 11.15 2.54
May 5.60 1.83
Jun 4.40 1.53
5 Starts, 1-2, 28 2/3 IP, 40 H, 18 R, 14 ER, 13/4 K/BB, 4 HR
Green had his best month yet but he is still giving up a lot of hits. It will
take some time to reduce his ERA after the ugly April but at least he is moving
in the right direction.
AJ Shappi
Apr 10.23 2.23
May 5.73 1.48
Jun 3.86 1.41
5 Starts, 2-0, 32 2/3 IP, 38 H, 16 R, 14 ER, 14/8 K/BB, 5 HR
Shappi had the best ERA in the rotation and was unbeaten for the month.
Homers are still an issue.
Jonatan Valverde
Apr 33.75 7.50
May 11.74 2.48
6 Games, 1-0, 7 2/3 IP, 14 H, 10 ER, 9/5 K/BB
Good news, he cut his ERA by 20 points. Bad news, it was still over 10 for
the month.
South Bend Silver Hawks
Their best starter Eddie Baeza was promoted to Lancaster and their next best
Cody Evans is joining him. The rest of the rotation is not dominating but the
team keeps winning. Most of this is due to a very strong bullpen with 4
pitchers (Kyler Newby, Ryan Doherty, Forrest Coty and Vince Bongiovanni)
capable of shutting down the opponents in the late innings. It will be
interesting to see if the D’Backs bring up one of their 2006 draft picks
from the Short Season leagues to fill up Evans spot.

Has inherited the mantle of team ace from Baeza and has been great in June
with 4 quality starts. Throw out his 1 bad start (blame it on the 06/06/06)
where he gave up 7 runs in 6 innings and his numbers are stunning : 0.79 ERA,
0.74 WHIP in 34 innings.
Vince Bongiovanni

Jun 0.84 0.47
7 Games, 1-0, 1 Save, 10 2/3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 19/2 K/BB
Great K numbers. Forming a great bullpen with Bongiovanni and Cory to support
closer Kyler Newby.
Kyler Newby
May 3.86 1.29
Jun 0.00 0.34
6 Games, 1-0, 4 Saves, 11 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 21/4 K/BB
The Silver Hawks’ new closer had an almost perfect June, allowing no hits
and no runs in 11 2/3 innings. He got a win and 4 saves in his 6 appearances.
He also struck out 21 with just 4 walks.
