Grace files for free agency to clear way for new deal

Mark Grace agreed to forego the $3 million option year of his contract
and filed for free agency on Friday but is expected to re-sign with the
Arizona Diamondbacks for less money.


The 38-year-old first baseman and Diamondbacks managing general partner
Jerry Colangelo reached a handshake agreement in September to tear up the
option clause and sign a new contract.                                          

Grace has said that next season will be his last as a major leaguer and
he wants to end his career with Arizona. Grace, his wife and young son
make their home in the Phoenix area.
