I am a commuter, shuttling to and fro between Tainan and Kaohsiung.
In the train station, on the platform, in the train, people come and go,
not talking of Michaelangelo, like T. S. Eliot said. People come and go,
like colorful threads being woven into a web, and all of us are trapped
into it, finding no way out. Why are we always dwelling on the Unberable
Lightness of Being? Students in uniforms, huddled over books while waiting
for the train. Soliders with crew cuts and suntanned skin, talk to their
girlfriends that they miss them through the phone. Businessmen, with suit
and tie, are plotting the blueprints for the company. Old men, with local
specialties, are expecting to meet someone important in their lives. There
are still more and more, and the list goes on and on. People walk in, hop
on the train, bearing different feelings. Some have nostalgia, for I see
tears shed as the train pulls out of the staion; others are composing their
fantasia, fantasizing sweet things in a new land; still others seem to
undertake anesthesia, slumbering and dreaming. People walk out, hop out the
train, heading for their destinations: The school, for taking the tests; the
company, for making the money; The home, for taking a shelter. People come
go, and where are they going? They seem to be in hustle and bustle.
What for? Why are people apprehensive about the unbearable lightness of
being. From Altair or Vega, regardless of the train type, Tzu Chiang,
Chu Kuang, or THSR, the movement of us is akin to an infinitesimal speck of
dust,being sent to the air, so light, so insignificant. "20 on my math exam?"
So light. "Only 8k per month?" So light. "Have no boy/girlfriend?" So light.
So anyway, where are we heading? Where are we from? What is your next
stop in life? Fame? Wealth? Well-being? No! "Ladies and gentlemen, we are now
at the last stop, Kaohsiung."
